Froeliche geburtstag!

December 16th, 2014 by Fred Westervelt

Happy Birthday!

Born on December 16, 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was destined to become one of the preeminent composers of all time. His works reveal the power and complexity of a remarkable person.

A widely known anecdote, one of my favorites and well enough documented to dispel any tho’t that it is apocryphal,  reveals that at the conclusion of the 1824 inaugural performance of his epic 9th Symphony, which he conducted, he had to be turned around to face the thunderous applause from the audience. For, you see, he had become nearly totally deaf in his later and most productive years, and could hear neither orchestra nor the cheering.

He died in 1827.

We quietly celebrate his life.

Alles Gut zum Geburtstag …_

December 16th, 2012 by Fred Westervelt

Of  Belgian heritage (hence van, not von) Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn on this date in 1770. Truly a giant among giants,  And to think-  he completed his 9th Symphony while completely deaf and was unable to hear its full orchestral/choral premier performance, which he conducted. Beethoven is our Composer of the Day.

We are contemplating that next year we may resume at The Cove B&B our long interrupted tradition of celebrating more tangibly this momentous event. Freude!
