Dreaming of figs

March 23rd, 2016 by Fred Westervelt

fig treesFor the last week or so, I’ve been watching the leaves emerge on our fig trees. I love the two trees we have in our front yard, they aren’t really my fig producers (that’s the old gnarly tree out back). But together they make a wonderful privacy fence for our guests when they are enjoying breakfast on a beautiful Ocracoke summer morning, or a glass of wine watching the sunset over the Pamlico Sound. Ahh, that is what makes me dream of figs, when I see those leaves I know that means summer will be here soon, my very favorite season of the year! You can already feel the air is getting warmer, I can hop on a bike with just a light sweater, the flannel sheets are packed up for another year, and I can throw open the doors and windows to let in the fresh Spring air.
So come on summer 2016, we’re ready for our figs!
