Hurricane Sandy has come and gone. Once again, the weather gods have smiled upon Ocracoke. We had only several days of inundation, little significant structural damage and but a modest amount of needed cleanup. The beaches are open, ferry access via the mainland has been restored, and the village is emerging and humming. The Cove is fine.
Our friends on Hatteras Island have not been so fortunate, with major highway compromise at several places. Evaluation of this, and its repair, are underway, with the road from Rodanthe northward being especially problematic. For frequent updates on all this, and more, see www.islandfreepress.org and www.ocracokecurrent.com.
Of course we join the nation in being stunned by the carnage in the Northeast and westward, and extend to the devastated our prayers and wishes for recovery.
